Sometimes if we are to be truly honest then we’d have to say that Jesus said some pretty shocking things, so shocking that people dare not even talk about them. You could say that one of the most shocking things that Jesus said is in Luke 14:26 and people might say, “what could Jesus have said that was so shocking then? I’m not easily shocked so shock me then!” Well, to quote Jesus’ own words, he said, “If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.” The response to these words might very well be shock and horror because people might say: “what the hell could Jesus possibly mean by these words? I thought he was one of the good guys and here he is telling me to hate my father & mother & wife & children & brethren & sisters and even my own life! Are you sure you are reading this from the bible?” Well, sorry sir and yes sir but I am, and their answer to that might be: “would you mind explaining yourself here, just what is your point of view, did I miss something?” The best answer to that would be: “I appreciate your concerns and yes, you are doubly right to be concerned and yes, I do think you have missed something, I’ll do my best to explain!”
First of all, I’d like to quote something of a more-light hearted though deep verse that Saint John wrote down, he said, “…if we walk in the light, as he (Jesus) is in the light, we have fellowship one with another.” (John 1:7) So then it must follow that if we don’t walk in the light as He, Jesus, is in the light then we won’t have fellowship one with another. So what is fellowship? It’s a word that people have no-doubt heard of and it tends to have all kinds of religious connotations connected to it but when you shed some light on the word from the dictionary then you find that in short it simply means: a friendly association, especially with people who share one’s interests and even joint participation towards a common goal. Interestingly enough, there are also other organisations that have the word “fellow” in them, for instance, there is a group called “Oddfellows,” this is what you might call a secret society fellowship and what unites these people are secrets, they all share in a secret and so they all feel united in this and it brings a kind of a depth to their fellowship.
So fellowship isn’t a corny old surface word, to have true fellowship with somebody else then there has to be some real depths to that relationship and the deepest relationship that anyone could possibly have is a spiritual relationship, if you don’t have a spiritual relationship with your husband & wife & family & children & brethren then there is something seriously seriously missing in your family and there is something seriously seriously missing in your own life because no matter what your interests and what apparently unites you all, it will lack that vital and most crucial ingredient, that crucial and most vital ingredient is the light of life, the light of Jesus Christ. If Jesus is not in your home then your home, your whole family, will find themselves spiritually dead and so you have a kind of a spiritless zombie family, you’d just as well be a family of zombies and if you’ve ever felt the feeling of spiritual death then you will understand that there is no love in you and there is no love in them and so you all wind up hating each other because you have not the love of Jesus in your family, you have not the light of Jesus in your family and if you haven’t got Jesus in your own heart then you will find yourself not only hating your own family but hating your own life, you will feel so empty and void and lifeless that if you were to be honest you would have to say at this point that you actually feel like one of the living dead, the same here could be said of the whole world and of every nation in it, all finding themselves trapped by the chains of conformity and spiritual death in a world where nobody loves anyone anymore.
A lot of people these days are experiencing these feelings and they just don’t know what it is because nobody has ever told them and you particularly feel sorry for young people because a lot of them feel trapped in this and they find themselves living out some kind of top room existence and up there they might find themselves doing endless selfies and things and trying to find true fellowship and love with other people on the Internet. No one has ever told them of the things that St John understood all too well, that a lot of Christians understand all too well also, that if we walk in the light as He is in the light then we have fellowship one with another. Even a Christian finds himself not able to walk with those that are not in the light and that may well include your own family also because “what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness and what communion hath light with darkness.” So this is a deeply deeply serious problem in today’s society and people might have nicely polished front rooms etc. but they might just as well be living in a polished hell, they might just as well be living in some kind of zombie parlour where there is no love, they are so chained to the chains of conformity that they are frightened to break loose even though they hate everything they are, they hate everything their family stands for, and so in this they hate their own family and their own life, they hate their zombie like existence and this spiritual death feeling in their heart.
The only way out of these problems is to do as Jesus said and to do as John said to do, and that is to walk in the light as Jesus is in the light. Jesus said He is the door and if we walk through that door, through Jesus, then we are stepping into His spiritual world or in other words, His spiritual Kingdom where everyone fellowships together in true spiritual light and true spiritual love and true spiritual inner-depths. It is only when we step into the light ourselves that we can pull others out of the darkness, we can pull our husbands and wives out of the darkness, we can pull our brothers and sisters out of the darkness, we can pull our brethren out of the darkness and we can all find a whole new life together, even forever. But one thing we find that we must not do and that is to not step back into the darkness and not go with them that refuse to walk in the light and this we believe is what Jesus meant by this shocking statement and yet wonderful statement, wonderful because we could all have so much more, we could all have so much love between us, we could all have so much more of Jesus between us, we could all be walking in the light as He is in the light and then we would all have true deep deep spiritual fellowship one with another.
