Everyone is looking for true love and it could also be said that everyone is looking for Mr Right or Mrs Right and in a lot of ways people might find themselves being like a salmon who swims upstream and against all those currants in order to find true love or you could find yourself crossing an endless dessert nursing a broken heart and perhaps even coming from a broken background in your pursuit of love. Not many people pray these days in order to find love but still there are lots that still do. There must be someone out there we all think that we are meant to be with and there must be some kind of situation or some place that you might need to go in order to find true love, they do say marriages are made in heaven don’t they! And in a lot of ways the thoughts of marriage are very very good because if you really really do want to find that Mr Right or Mrs Right then your hope surely has to be that God has created such a person just for you!
Adam in the bible was lonely and nursed a broken heart, he named all those animals and yet there was none like him, he had a beautiful stream in his garden to perhaps even swim in and to drink from but that stream would always be a lonely steam without love and no matter how much he drank from it it would never quench his thirst for love! But he did eventually find love but first he had to understand the need for true love so when he found true love then he would truly appreciate it and love and cherish it with all of his heart!
Moses was also a man that found true love, he’d crossed a long and lonely dessert and had come from a broken background, it had all gone wrong for him in Egypt and pharaoh was out to kill him and so he had to flee from Egypt and found himself all alone, but miraculously enough for him he found himself in the land of Midian and he was sat down by a well and here is another one of God’s set-ups because the seven daughters of the priest of Midian had also come to the well at the same time that Moses found himself sat down by that well and to add a twist to the true story, some shepherds also came along and drove these women away from the well. Moses saw the injustice of this and stood up and helped the women and also helped water their flock and so these seven daughters took Moses home with them and introduced Moses to their father and Moses fell in love with one of them called Zipporah and so God’s set-up had truly worked wonders in Moses life in mending his broken heart and broken life!
Isaac was a man who also longed for love but he also understood that it had to be Mrs Right or it was no love at all, Isaac’s dad also understood this and so at the right time he sent one of his servants to find Isaac’s true love. The servant didn’t know how he would find such a girl, all he knew was that he had to go back to Abraham’s former country and there he would find one amongst Abraham’s kindred but he also knew something else which was very very important that Abraham had told him and that was that God would send his angel before him and so in this same sense he was saying that the angel would find Isaac’s wife and would also bring about another one of God’s set-ups and remarkably enough this servant also found himself coming to a well. It was evening and at evening the women of the town would come to draw water from the well, the servant quickly prayed when he saw these women coming and said that if he asked one of the women to give him a drink and she said yes and also offered to give water to his camels then let this be the one that you have chosen to be Isaac’s wife and so yes, such a women did come along and she did give him a drink and water for his camels also and her name was Rebekah and she chose to go back with the servant to meet her Mr Right and truly she was right for him and he was right for her even though they had never met before in their whole lives and this really really does tell us how marriages are made in heaven because Isaac took her to be his wife and they had many long years together!
Another one of God’s remarkable set-ups was to also happen at a well and this one was going to involve Jesus Himself because Jesus met a woman at a well. Jesus had been on a long journey with His disciples and had become wearied with His journey and so He sat down on the wall of a well and it was about the sixth hour and so the sun was setting and a woman who lived in Samaria came to the well to draw some water. Jesus sat there all alone because His disciples had gone away into the city to buy meat so they were very much alone and no-doubt this is how the whole thing was set up by God Himself so that Jesus could talk to her all alone and so Jesus asked her to give him a drink, this surprised the woman because the Jews and the Samaritans didn’t get on and they had nothing to do with each other and wouldn’t even talk as a rule and so she said to him,
“How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealing with the Samaritans. Jesus answered and said unto her, if thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that sayeth to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.”
What a strange thing to say the woman must have thought to herself because Jesus had nothing to draw the water with and she knew that the well was deep and so she said to him,
“…from whence then hast thou that living water?” Jesus’ answer to that was, “Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.”
At this point the woman must have sensed that she was talking to someone more special, that there was something unusual about this whole situation, she could no-doubt sense the magic in the air and that magic in the air was the very Spirit of God that Jesus was operating under and you could only imagine that Jesus’ words must have seemed to her to be like a wonderful endless stream that she’d longed to swim in, she’d thirsted for love her whole life and then Jesus out of the blue suddenly said to her, “go and fetch your husband!” She appears here to be more guarded and didn’t wish to disclose her past and so she replied, “I have no husband!” Here she was forming a wonderful friendship with Jesus and if she told Him that she had been married five times then maybe He would run a mile. Perhaps she was finding Mr Right here she may have thought, perhaps she had never felt this way before with a man as she felt at that time with Jesus, she could feel the thirst in her heart being quenched and satisfied, maybe her heart was starting to fill up and was starting to reach the overflowing point, she no-doubt wanted to capture the moment and perhaps she even wanted to catch the man! She’d no-doubt had known many many men and was the kind of woman that pursued men in her pursuit of love because not only had she been married five times but now she was also living with a man, perhaps she wanted to live with this man for a longer period of time before she married him as she didn’t want another failed relationship so perhaps she wasn’t quite sure of the man she was living with either but then there was this wonderful man that she was talking to at the well and then Jesus surprised her once again when He told her that He knew that she had been married five times and that she was now living with a man! She must at this point have felt totally transparent but the strange thing about Jesus’ words was that He knew all about her and that He already knew her intimately, He knew that she’d always longed for love and it appears also that He knew also that she’d longed for truth and then she quickly replied, “Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet” because how could Jesus know all about her, they’d never before met and so if He was a prophet then maybe she should start talking religion she thought, she talked of how her people would worship in the mountain and how Jesus’ people, the Jews, would worship in the temple but Jesus quickly put her in the picture and said that it’s not about mountains and temples but it’s more about Spirit and in this same sense He was saying that it’s more about LOVE because God is a Spirit and they that worship Him (love Him) must love Him in Spirit and in Truth and at this point you would have to say for the woman that everything in her life had suddenly fallen in place, she’d found the true love that she’d always been looking for in Jesus! Jesus knew her intimately and hadn’t condemned her but instead He’d pointed her to the true waters of life, to the well (Jesus) that would be in her, a well of water springing up into everlasting life, that Jesus could be in her heart like a well and in that well would be everlasting waters and everlasting love! So that’s what had been missing in all those marriages and all those broken relationships, marriages truly should be made in heaven and we all need the Love of Jesus to make it work!
“The woman then left her water pot, and went her way into the city, and sayeth to the men, come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?…”
