Just about everybody has been to see a doctor and in this modern day and age lots of people have had x-rays of one form or another. If you have problems with your joints then you might need an x-ray or if you have problems in the marrow of the bones then you might need an x-ray and after the x-ray it could follow that you would need an operation and everyone knows that when you need an operation that it usually entails a surgeon’s knife which is called a scalpel, but interestingly enough, a surgeon these days might not use a scalpel for the operation because they now have a sharper knife so to speak and that knife would be sharper than any other knife or scalpel and is called a laser. So very often an operation can be performed very precisely and very effectively with a laser being involved; a laser it could be said is sharper than any two-edged sword/knife and it is also tissue sparing when they use a laser so less scarring.
So all of this to say what happens when you have a physical affliction and you go and see a doctor but what should you do if you have a spiritual affliction? Then you would need to see a spiritual doctor! Well, funny enough there is a spiritual doctor out there that can help the spiritually afflicted and that spiritual doctor so happens to be called Jesus Christ. “For we have not an high priest (doctor) which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities (physical or mental weakness); but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin” (Hebrews 4:15). So Dr Jesus is a kind of a down to earth doctor in that He understands our physical weaknesses and has also learnt how to overcome them and has had plenty of experiences along those lines so He knows exactly what the problem is and He also knows just what we need to do to solve that problem, not only that, Jesus has what you might call x-ray eyes in that He can see right inside of you for, “Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do” (Hebrews 4:13).
St Paul also was a kind of a high priest and spiritual doctor, he as good as said that this was his profession when he talked of following Jesus example as a high priest and said, “…let us hold fast our profession” (Hebrews 4:14). One of Paul’s prime concerns in being a high priest was with his own people, the Jews of his day, he was talking to these people on one occasion of the problems that Moses had with his own people in the wilderness. The children of Israel in Moses’ day were what you might call spiritual wonderers in the wilderness and Moses’ job as high priest back then was to teach his people to become less physically minded and more spiritually minded, Moses had endless problems with this and most of the children of Israel back then died in unbelief. Paul talks of this when he says, speaking of God, “But with whom was he grieved forty years? Was it not with them that had sinned, whose carcasses fell in the wilderness? (Hebrews 3:17). St Paul was using this story about Moses and the children of Israel to help his people appreciate the dangers that they were in in falling short of true belief in Jesus Christ, the True High Priest and doctor if you like. He had no-doubt noticed the same unbelief creeping in and was telling his people that they needed to go and see Dr Jesus; Dr Jesus who has x-ray eyes will see just what the problem is!
Paul also knew that sin creeping in was like a cancer that would need to be cut out very quickly before it started to spread around the whole body and so Paul said to his people, “…the word (Jesus) of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12). So what was Paul saying here in this verse? He was saying that the True Word of God, Jesus, is “alive (quick) and powerful” and He is sharper than any two-edged sword and these days you might picture this two-edged sword being more like a laser in that a laser is kind of alive, it’s quick and quick in the bible means: “alive.” Paul goes onto say in this verse that it pierces “even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit.” Paul also understood the meaning of the word soul; soul simply means that we as humans are both body and spirit; talking about these two as one then we are called a soul – so body and spirit equals soul. As living souls, we should be operating more on a spiritual level than on a physical level because it’s more important that we grow spiritually than it is to grow physically; if we forget our spiritual nature then we end up operating more under the physical side of our being, we should always remember that first and foremost we are spiritual beings and as spiritual beings we need to grow spiritually simply because one day we will die and leave this life behind and all that we will take with us is everything that we have learnt here and all the spiritual growing that we did here will of course go with us, our physical bodies will be left behind so it’s extremely important that we grow spiritually and not so much physically and it is also extremely important that we stay alive spiritually more than physically!
To stay alive spiritually we first and foremost need to believe in Jesus, we take Jesus into our hearts and Jesus takes away all of our unbelief; we are in this same sense born again in that we cease to operate physically and start to operate more spiritually; this is obviously good because having Jesus in our hearts we are now everything that we should be, we are still living souls in that we have both body and spirit (soul) but again, we are now operating more spiritually rather than physically, we are more spirit than we are flesh but…there is a danger… and that danger is that unbelief or even false beliefs can enter in; unbelief entering in will take us away from the spiritual and as living souls we will start to operate more physically rather than spiritually so what Paul was saying when he talked about this dividing asunder of soul and spirit was that if we operate under unbelief and sin then we would cease to be spiritually minded and have more in common with flesh, this is what he meant by the dividing asunder of soul and spirit and the only way to become more spirit rather than to be merely a soul is to have Jesus in our hearts and in our life; to have full belief in Jesus means that we are spirit spirit and not merely a carnally minded soul without the Spirit of Jesus. So when sin enters in it brings in division, there is a dividing asunder of soul (You) and the spiritual you that you now should be, the new born again you! The new born again you is the spirit you; the old you, the body and spirit equals soul YOU without Jesus would be the old man, the old soul YOU that didn’t have Jesus; the new soul YOU that has Jesus is the new spiritual spirit YOU, the born again YOU so Paul is saying, don’t let unbelief (sin) creep in or it will bring division and a dividing asunder of soul and spirit – the new You verses the old You!
Sin separates us from Jesus and throws us straight back into the flesh and into our old self. A Christian’s spiritual walk is to do just that, to walk in the Spirit of Jesus, in the Spirit of God, so if unbelief enters in in any shape, form, or size then we will need to quickly get it out, we will need to go to Dr Jesus; Dr Jesus can take sin out of even the joints and the marrow, He is sharper than any surgeons knife, be it scalpel or laser. Jesus is also a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart, He knows more about what you are thinking and intending than you do yourself; thoughts and words that enter into the mind and heart can be like cancers; if they are left un-operated upon then they could spread as doth a cancer. So yes, if any of us are having a problem with unbelief then we should go straight to Dr Jesus; Dr Jesus will operate on us straight away with no waiting time; He will quickly cut the unbelief out and have us back up and running in no time!
