Everything that Jesus ever said was always earth shaking and still is to this day; it can’t be emphasised enough just how earth shaking Jesus’ words really are! On one occasion Jesus was talking to two of His disciples about a particular situation, the situation was that Jesus was going to enter into a village of the Samaritans and it turned out that they wouldn’t receive Him there; you can only assume by what you read here that possibly these people that wouldn’t receive Jesus weren’t altogether polite about it and were getting into the wrong spirit because it says in Luke 9:54:
“And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did?” But then we read on and it says, 55. “But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of. 56. For the Son of man is not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.”
One of the main interesting points about these verses is the bit where it says “ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.” These situations where the disciples didn’t know what manner of spirit they were of appear to of frequently cropped up, the disciples would frequently yield to the wrong spirit and say the wrong things; Peter once yielded to the wrong spirit when Jesus was telling His disciples of,
“…how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day” (Matthew 16: 21). We read on and it says, 22. “Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee.”
What Peter said here might to some people read to be all well and good because you can only imagine that it might be the sort of thing you yourself might say to somebody if you wanted to bring them to their senses. We’ve all perhaps been in situations where our friends might say things that we think aren’t thought through and therefore we ourselves might rebuke our friend and say words to the effect of “pull yourself together man!” and of course, we might be in the right spirit when we say these words and we might mean well with our good advice as coming from a friend but on the other hand, we might say it in the wrong spirit and it’s particularly a serious spirit if you say it with the spirit that Peter was talking from. Peter was clearly talking from Satan himself; Satan was actually using Peter as a medium to speak through and to get at Jesus and to sow doubt in Jesus’ own mind and of course he wanted to bring Jesus down and discourage Him from the very mission and even the very reason that He was ever born into this world, that reason being that He came to die for the sins of both you and I and the whole world. So then we read on and it says,
23. “But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.”
It is interesting in this verse here that it uses the words “savourest not the things that be of God.” I take this to mean that Jesus was in a sense using His spiritual discernment which of course Jesus had and He could taste that these words that Peter was saying were in no way good and were no way ever to be swallowed, that they would be poison to your soul and would in no way do you any good whatsoever and so Jesus strongly rejected these words as coming from the wrong spirit.
It’s something we all have to ask ourselves quite frequently these days; if even the disciples of Jesus would often fall into the trap of yielding to the wrong spirit, then we’d have to say that the same could just as easily happen to us and not only us but the whole world around us. We should surely have to frequently ask: What manner of spirit are ye of? When you look at politics these days, surely we should be asking: What manner of spirit are ye of? Whether it’s Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton or President Obama or any other would-be politician in America or even the whole world: What manner of spirit are ye of? So when we watch the news we should be asking: What manner of spirit are ye of? When a war breaks out in the middle east, when there are economic troubles and woes, when we hear of austerity measures and cut-backs, when the Pope makes visits to foreign lands and speaks of all the religions in the world uniting, when we see a gay parade on the TV and the White House lit up in rainbow colours, when we see and hear of a new terrorist attack and false flag, when we hear preachers tell us that Jesus is coming back next week or the year after, when we hear of New Age religions, the New World Order, the coming great revival that’s apparently going to sweep the Christian world or when we see them talk in tongues and boast of all the visions they are having and all the great patriarchs and saints they are meeting up with, then again, we should be asking: What manner of spirit are ye of? Whether it’s Catholics, Protestants, Seventh Day Adventists, Mormons, Jehovah’s Witnesses, denominational or non denominational, or even if they be Buddhists, Hindus, Judaism, Islam, or Eastern religion, or even so-called white witches, Satanists and Illuminists: What manner of spirit are ye of? Every film you watch, every soap opera, every Pop song, every advertisement that entices you into buying houses, cars, clothes, computers and mobile phones or even the whole world and every idol in it, and just about everything that you see on the TV these days: What manner of spirit are ye of? Every magazine, every newspaper, every book, and just about everything you read of these days, the same is true: What manner of spirit are ye of? And then again, there is all this talk of evolution and life on other planets and all of these space probes and telescopes that are now seeking to make contact with aliens or to find life out there: What manner of spirit are ye of? Every school, college, or university: What manner of spirit are ye of? Every bank and every business and every other elitist: What manner of spirit are ye of?
And even every new translation of the King James Bible that have taken these very words out of their bible, these including the New International version, the New Living translation, English Standard version etc. etc. What manner of spirit are ye of? (Luke 9:55)
