There is an interesting matter in the book of Daniel concerning the king Nebuchadnezzar. Nebuchadnezzar had been given a dream and in his dream he saw a tree: “The tree grew, and was strong, and the height thereof reached unto heaven, and the sight thereof to the end of all the earth: The leaves thereof were fair, and the fruit thereof much, and in it was meat for all: the beasts of the field had shadow under it, and the fowls of the heaven dwelt in the bowels thereof, and all flesh was fed of it. I saw in the visions of my head upon my bed, and, behold, a watcher and an holy one came down from heaven; He cried aloud, and said thus, Hew down the tree, and cut off his branches, shake off his leaves, and scatter his fruit: let the beasts get away from under it, and the fowls from his branches: Nevertheless leave the stump of his roots in the earth, even with a band of iron and brass, in the tender grass of the field; and let it be wet with the dew of heaven, and let his portion be with the beasts of the earth: Let his heart be changed from man’s, and let a beasts heart be given unto him; and let seven times pass over him. This matter is by the decree of the watcher, and the demand by the word of the holy ones: to the intent that the living may know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the basest of men” (Daniel 4:11-17).
It is also interesting to see through this dream of Nebuchadnezzar that there are watchers (angels) who are watching over the affairs of man and that we are not alone here, the real reality of the matter is that these watchers and holy ones are the ones that are in charge and mankind and their rulers only think they are in charge and even think they are the most High. In Nebuchadnezzar’s dream you read that “…the height thereof reached unto heaven.” The fact that it was reaching unto heaven would appear to suggest that Nebuchadnezzar was assuming the role of God and so he’d gone too far with his delusions of grandeur and was now operating as if he was walking amongst the gods and was even acting as if he was God and was the most High. As again, the real reality of the matter was “…that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men” and even the watchers are put in charge of the affairs of men and no matter what decree or what rule or what laws we make down here as mere humans, these watchers can overrule these matters and put their own stamp of authority over these would-be-most-high rulers and as it says, “This matter is by the decree of the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones: to the intent that the living may know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the basest of men.”
The simple interpretation of this dream was told to Nebuchadnezzar by Daniel. The tree was symbolic of Nebuchadnezzar’s rule and kingdom. Nebuchadnezzar was king and ruler of the whole world in his day. The problem with him was that he had become proud and was taking too much credit to himself, whereas the actual reality of the matter was as it says, “…that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the basest of men.” What is interesting here in this verse is the bit where it says that “God setteth up over it (the world) the basest of men” and also that it says, “giveth it to whomsoever he will.” So Nebuchadnezzar’s rule was purely in God’s hands, even if he was one of the basest of men and God can take it away at any moment, particularly if these base rulers become all too proud and all too big for their boots as they say. The word base means: Someone who operates usually from selfish motivation and from a standpoint of being morally low rather than morally high. We only have to look at the leaders of the world today to find out what this word means and to see that it’s true that God does indeed set up over the world the basest of men and these basest of men do come and go down through the ages. God can set them up in order to have some sort of order in the world as he did with Nebuchadnezzar and God can also bring them low as He did with Nebuchadnezzar; they could one day be walking with kings and princes and the next day they could find themselves as low as the actual beasts of the field as did Nebuchadnezzar, so in other words, they, like a tree, can be cut down at any time!
So the affairs of mankind are purely in the hands of God and purely in the hands of another hierarchy which in the book of Daniel are called “watchers.” These watchers must watch over the affairs of mankind in order to make sure that mankind doesn’t cross certain lines and if they do cross certain lines then it is purely at the discretion of the watchers as to whether thy are allowed to do so or not. This point of view in the book of Daniel makes it quite clear that the name of the game down here on earth is that God in His Wisdom has allowed these basest of men to come to power. What we must know as somewhat mere mortals who often find ourselves under the ruthless heel of these base rulers is that we have a higher power that we can look to, we can go right over their heads and go straight to these watchers, or better said, we can go straight to God Himself with our requests. Jesus said, “He that hath my commandments and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father and we will come unto him and make our abode with him.” So we can be in the world but not of the world, we can find ourselves presently stuck with these rulers but better than this, we can go right over their heads and find ourselves better stuck with the true ruler and rulers of this world. We can do this by keeping the commandments that Jesus gave us to keep. Jesus summed up His commandments in one word “Love.” He said, “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another” and He said that if we do this, then He will come unto us and He and His Father will make their abode with us!
We do find ourselves worrying an awful lot sometimes about the affairs of this world and about the affairs of our own household even, about matters concerning our own family and families and these present wicked rulers do not help in these matters, they only hinder and make life hard for us all but it is really really important for us to know that we can be truly spiritually connected to an incredibly spiritual and powerful God who truly rules here through the spiritual and the spiritual is always higher than the physical because it is out of the spiritual that the physical came and the physical is subject to the spiritual and not the other way around – to enter the spiritual, all we need to do is believe this. Jesus said, “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” We need to approach God through Jesus, Jesus is the spiritual doorway in and will lead us straight to this spiritual God that truly rules over the affairs of man. By taking Jesus into your heart you can take God into your life and He will then help you with the affairs of not only your own life but even with the affairs of the world around you. It is exactly as Jesus said, that if we choose Jesus and if we choose through Jesus to love one another, then both Jesus and His Father will come unto us and make their abode with us!
