Karen: This is part of a discussion that I had with a very nice Seventh Day Adventist guy| This is how I see things and I’ll just put it simply here. We have Ten Commandments given to us by God. These Ten Commandments pretty much sum up to the average human being what is right and wrong. The average person knows that if they don’t keep these Ten Commandments, then they are doing something wrong in God’s eyes which we call sin. Well, let’s be fair here, the average person would agree with some of these Commandments because they bring law and order to the land and bring us into a more civilised world or not. Although of course, you would definitely conclude that most people would have a problem with Commandments One, Two, Three and Four and any other Commandments that directly involve God which of course they all do so this in short makes most people in today’s world sinners in that they are already breaking Four of God’s Commandments.
People clearly think and feel that these Commandments are a bind to them and they don’t wish to have governments unto God, they wish to be a law unto themselves. So clearly we have a world where people cannot even keep the Ten Commandments of God and they cannot even keep the laws that they choose themselves, which begs the question – just why is it that mankind cannot keep God’s Ten Commandments or even his own laws? The reason being, I’m sure we would all agree on, is that man is a prisoner to his own fleshly lusts, he loves the world more than he loves God, he loves himself more than he loves other people. In leaving God out of the picture, he is already unbalanced and excessive. He finds he has an empty aching void in his heart that has to be filled but instead of hungering after God and filling this void with the spiritual things of God, he chooses to hunger after the world and fill his heart with the things of the world. This leading him further and further into sin and the breaking of every Commandment, simply because his hungry heart cannot be satisfied with the things of the world no matter how much he consumes in his consumer societies. So man clearly cannot find his way out of all of this evil and wrongdoing by putting his own two and two together and relying on his own strength. He has not the wisdom, not the love, nor the strength of his own will to stop himself from doing evil.
With all of this in mind, some people look into religious solutions to all of these problems and a lot of people truly realise that it all boils down to the need to, as it says, “create in me a clean heart oh God and renew a right spirit within me” or as Jesus says we clearly need to be born again. Born again into the Kingdom of God and as becoming a Son of God and a citizen of God’s Kingdom and not a citizen of this world; choosing that God be our Father and for ourselves to be His sons & daughters. This purely from the standpoint as Jesus said in:
Luke 14:26 “If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, ye, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.”
I think true salvation comes to people who truly understand what this verse is saying. You reach a point in your life when you realise that you are so totally and utterly selfish that you can’t even love even your own family. You have found that the things of the world have left you totally and utterly empty, you have found that no matter how hard you try you cannot stop breaking God’s laws. You may even have tried as hard as you could but you still cannot keep God’s laws or even man’s laws or even your family’s laws. You are utterly selfish and cannot be a true citizen of this world, let alone a citizen of God’s world. You then get to realise that you need a saviour to save you out of all this; someone who can come into your heart and help you to do the loving thing purely because you want to and not because you have to. When you ask Jesus into your heart you find you want to do the right thing, you want to love God, in loving Jesus, you now find God, in loving other people you now find God and you now want to keep his Ten Commandments plus ONE being the eleventh commandment. John 13:34 “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.” The eleventh commandment which can even overrule the other Ten in certain situation as Jesus showed by healing a woman with a bent back on the Sabbath (Luke 13:10-17) as one example amongst others, this showing us that the Law of Love brings all the other commandments into balance and the gift of salvation also brings us into balance with God’s eleventh commandment, including the other ten.
Jesus understands that we will keep making mistakes until the day we die but we will not lose our salvation because of these mistakes. If we could lose our salvation when we make mistakes, then you would surely have to agree that there isn’t one person on this earth that can ever be saved! God is a loving God, a forgiving God that sent His only begotten Son into the world to pay the full penalty for wrongdoing and if we receive Jesus into our hearts then we can never ever cease to be one of God’s children. We can never ever cease to have Jesus in our hearts, He will always be there to help us do the right thing, He will always be there to help us keep God’s Ten Commandments with the eleventh commandment of Love, bringing these into balance with Love and not into the imbalance of sin without Love. After receiving salvation, if we do choose to break God’s eleventh commandment of love which takes in the Ten Commandments we will NOT lose our salvation but we will suffer the consequences of being unloving. Even more so now because we should know better, so yes, you can still suffer for wrongdoing after you are saved, you can seriously suffer in fact but you CANNOT lose your salvation – Jesus will always be in your heart and will NEVER leave nor forsake you – He will in NO WISE cast you out. You will not cease from being one of God’s children!
“Our works are the fruits of our salvation…not the root.” If righteousness comes by the law (keeping the Ten Commandments) then Christ is dead in vain. The Ten Commandments points to the sad fact that we are oh so human. So much so that God sadly said that He regretted making man. Mankind’s only hope is Christ in you (us) the hope of Glory. When God sees Jesus in us, old things are passed away, old regrets are passed away and all things are become new, we are all new creatures in Christ Jesus. We are no longer what the devil turned us into – servants of sin and misery – but we have now become servants of God and in happiness. Happiness that comes from truly loving God and others, so much more than the duty bound laws of the Ten Commandments. Jesus truly loves God and gave Him his all, with Jesus in our hearts, we can give God our all too. Without Jesus it’s all duty and no love!
