Just about everybody has heard of 666 these days, or in other words the number of the beast (Antichrist), but when you go back to the original writing in the King James version of the Bible then you could very well conclude that the number of the beast is not 666. The original words are written like this:
“Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred three score and six” (Revelation 13:18.)
It is interesting to note here that the original writers of the KJV have given a capital “S” when it talks of six hundred and a small “s” when it talks of the unit six. I remember at school being taught about hundreds, tens, and units, so here we have in this verse it would appear – just that, hundreds, tens, and units. To be even more accurate, it is talking of a number, that number being six hundred, three score (which is three twenties), and six, so I’m imagining “the” number being “six hundred and sixty-six” and definitely not as it is quoted today as being three separate unit numbers, each with a small “s” and people saying that the number of the beast is 666 with no capital “S” and no mention of hundreds and tens! It is also interesting for people to know that the number “six hundred threescore and six” has another mention in the Bible in the Old Testament. This verse talks of the weight of gold that came to Solomon in one year. The actual verse says:
“Now the weight of gold that came to Solomon in one year was six hundred threescore and six talents of gold” (1 Kings 10:14.)
It is quite clear in this verse that the original writers of the KJV were talking hundreds, tens, and units, or in other words, six hundred and sixty-six talents of gold! The other thing about this verse is that they have not used a capital “s” when it talks about six hundred so from all this you would surely have to ask: why did the King James translators of the Bible give a capital “S” to the number Six hundred threescore and six in Revelation? You would surely have to conclude that the number of the beast is actually the name of the beast; clearly this is so, simply because it says so in the verse previous to this one in Revelation 13:18. The previous verse says:
“And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name” (Revelation 13:17.)
So it is surely quite clear that the number of the beast is actually the name of the beast which is why it’s been capitalised – names are always capitalised! So clearly it is important to go with the original KJV as the translators went to great lengths to make everything completely accurate so when they wrote Six hundred threescore and six with a capital “S” then it meant just that, that the number of the beast is the name of the beast and his name in numbers is “Six hundred threescore and six.”
To summarise: most people don’t talk about the number of the beast as being the name of the beast so if we are ever to understand the number of his name then we will need to know the exact number we are dealing with for starters. We are dealing with the number Six hundred threescore and six, this being a round number and a whole number and not three individual unit numbers. Another way of looking at this is that if you were a code cracker and you were given a code to crack in numbers then you would need to know the exact number you were dealing with in order to crack the code. If the original writers of the Bible wrote the original number down as 666 as it’s written in the New English translation of the Bible (and many of the others) in numbers then it could be argued that we are talking three individual units with no tens or hundreds but no, the KJV translators made it quite clear that we are talking hundreds, tens, and units, as being the number of the beast or in other words the “Name of the beast”!
